Richard Baxter
Baxter lays out the founding thoughts and arguments for the wonder of God's promise of eternal life to all who truly believe in Jesus Christ. Presenting the certainty of the Christians' hope along with a clear call to any outside of Christ, as to the alternative. With his usual clarity he opens up before the reader all that God's promise presupposes in this life, as well as a vision of all the Scripture reveals of what awaits the believer after death.
It so happens, Baxter lived his life in constant pain and sickness to the extent that he and his congregation were in regular fear of him dying; and it was in one such time that he was drawn to consider the weighty subject of eternity. So in a strange way he was eminently qualified to encourage the reader to both hold the values of this life lightly, while living in expectation of giving up this weaker vessel for the renewed, eternal body prepared for the saints in heaven.
(This edition consists mostly of Book One of Baxter's full, extensive work, running to over 500 pages.)
